Untreated Incontinence

VETERINARY MEDICINE AND ME (7) Berrios Patricio Etchegaray. In the "U" (1986 - 1995). Trip to Huanuco, Peru.

My latest activities at the University of Chile (1986 -1995)
Huanuco Peru Trek 1994

1 .- In 1986 I was awarded the academic rank of Professor at the University of Chile, according to the General Rules of Career Academy. This title and the Ph.D. I did not remove anyone, not by decree. I will die with them. Both got a pure effort without any effort, no politics, no religion, or cronyism, only merit!, which I'm very proud.

In 1990 I was nominated for the High Commission of Academic Assessment at the University of Chile (21/septiembre/1990 - 6/abril/1992). A committee of pure heavyweight by Dr. Jorge Mardones Restat, a type of emergency. We had an overwhelming job because it opened the possibility that any teacher of the "U" might appeal to their last assessment. Were assessed on all
University of Chile. I applied my maxim: that is, has, and no, no. And they had their stuff out there. A nuclear physicist named Lundt was made famous by applying low the tested grades. A Mardones Restat, medical pharmacologist, won it once, he spoke of slip of the tongue and asked if there was another lapse, and I said yes: Calamis slip (writing error). He looked astonished, and I finished my saying that was Calamis pen, the old quill pen, concepts learned in the direction of the journal Advances in Veterinary Science ... Again I corrected but is written with an accent when he says short, I said not and did not correct the report, which was plagued by more without the accent and did not correspond in this case (but without the accent means however). Control issue, Mardones Restat had been Minister
Health, all of a sacred cow ... In those days my bus died before birth by a medical error of San Bernardo dr. It was a terribly painful situation, which might not want to remember ...!

those years I taught at several universities:

- Lecturer: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Federal University of Santa Maria. Rio Grande do Sul Brazil. September, 1993.
- Visiting Professor: Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Valdizán Hermilio University. Huanuco. Peru. December, 1994.
- Associate Professor, Departments of Virology and Viral Diseases. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Universidad de Concepción. Campus Chillán. 1992 - 1993, and from 1996 to 1999.

My last trip abroad, scholarship went to the Institute of Agricultural Technology. Center for Research in Veterinary Science. Buenos Aires. Argentina. October, 1990. Granted by FAO. Gift took a cell line, RFE, obtained in our laboratory. And bovine herpes virus to an international study was conducted in the INTA Castellar, which resulted in an international publication.

An anecdote: Dr. Alejandro Schudel bothered me every day saying this chilenito who speaks so furrowed. I took revenge on Santa Fe in a meal with river fish, delicious and good beer. To refuse to serve more alcohol to be cold, Schudel I blurted out to these chilenitos would have reached Easter Island, and I replied softly No, because we do not give up! A good listener, few words. And we were very good friends. The crazy Schudel is a great professional, international scope.

Recent research projects that participated were:

- comparative study of South American strains of bovine herpes virus type 1. Project INTA Castelar, Argentina. Researcher responsible alternative. 1990 to 1991.

- bovine viral diarrhea. Prospective study in cattle in the Metropolitan Region. Project A 3141. Technical Investigation Department. Universidad de Chile (1991 - 1996). Co-investigator.
- Evaluation of virological diagnostic techniques to bovine viral diarrhea virus. FONDECYT 1996 to 1997. Co-investigator.

A comment on the Chilean research: I never knew of a failed project ... In the end I went disappointing the formation of groups of researchers who helped each other in the selection and evaluation ... I rejected a draft not be useful for the country (probably the referee was SAG), the other argued that the project was bad from the inside, the referee was a man of many scrolls human virologist but not cool, that is a little thing as a person ...

And without knowing how I was the time at the University of Chile ...

2 .- Travel to Huanuco, Peru 1994

Mighty Enciso Javier Gutierrez, a former student of post graduate and then professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, National University Hermilio Valdizán of Huanuco, Peru I had always threatened that I was going to Peru. And it was. But I could not go to the International Course "Advances in Viral Veterinary Pathology" which was issued in June 1994 because I broke my right elbow when he fell ten parts of the second floor of my house that was varnishing. I had surgery and physical therapy I was a very good reasonably well.

Travel to Lima in December 1994. And from Lima to Huanuco in an old Russian Antonov aircraft E80 that looked like it would fall just held by their propellers ... I was very, very well received and attended by my fellow Peruvians. The truth is that they went to serve you well.

I stayed at a tourist hotel that was across the square. A beautiful hotel, almost stately, I say. First. Huánuco had just celebrated 450 years of its founding.

I noticed that the place was surrounded by two traffic lanes in opposite directions. Had to be careful. The trees in the plaza were very bright and very well meet lush decorative paper. Curiously, the Cathedral of Huanuco was modern style. The Huallaga river through the city I had a lot of colonial, with its beautiful churches and old houses. I was impressed by the bridge of Cal y Canto, colonial-style course. Were not many cars but few tricycles covered had never known ...

University, good structure, was painted blue by the military. It was time to guerrillas in Peru's Fujimori. And the military was in college. I asked why that situation, and told me that some day came guerrillas heavily armed and shot a teacher in front of their students. It's that simple ...

The veterinary school was located in several places. I did the classes at a local university in the center of Huanuco. The students were veterinary students, a doctor, a zoologist. Some 50 students. Classes were held in the afternoon, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The animal virology course lasted almost a month and I was called Post Graduate Course in Virology. 1994. Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Valdizán Hermilio University. Huanuco. Peru. The responsible was Dr. Javier Enciso G. And I entirely dictated. It is worth remembering that during June was larger participating several teachers, and I should have talked about virology, infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, equine influenza and rotavirus. But a damn straight that I missed while I was up on the second floor, it was not possible. But I must say, going only received attention exclusively!
The course went smoothly. A day in the middle of class was a storm with thunder and lightning, startling. At the end of the course Dr. Javier Enciso G. handed a book of Animal Virology of 57 pages, of which I was the sole author and his publisher. Booklet that I have no, I lent and never saw him again ... By the way I did a couple of hours a virology course veterinary very young students seemed intimidated by me ... ha!

I was lucky to observe the Pillco Mozo that monitors and protects Huánuco, a huge rock in human form is seen only in the evenings. I took him to the top ... One day we visited the ruins of Kotosh, located near Huánuco about 5 km, and the river Higueras had to go through it in a lifeline and it came to the famous ruins, the Temple of the crossed hands "typical of the period preceramic. Inca remains for me to know was a novelty. Unfortunately I did not know or Cuzco and Machu Pichu. I would have liked to know more about the Moral Law of the Incas, the ANA SUA ... One day

I ate guinea pigs, invited by Dr. Jesus Rodriguez. They were tasty as chicken meat, but eat little ones as thrushes ... The IDMA

and Agrarian Development Institute saw a Brown Swiss breeds of spectacular! And boats, not students, but breeds of ducks. In the Cooperative Velasco Alvarado was a colonial sugar mill, grinding stones, ancient things, when I entered a large courtyard, I had the strange feeling that there was something hidden beneath the earth. And it must have been a buried treasure, my third eye is not wrong, ha! ...

In Tomiyquchua was outside the house of the famous Pericholi. There was a beautiful church that was the Perricholi. The place was very nice!

went to Tingo Maria, the town of Coca, located near the junction between the Monzon and Huallaga rivers, invited by the dean Dr. Praxedes Cubas, and two colleagues, in a little car, the few that were in Huanuco 1994, the driver went along precipices like crazy because I saw was in the front seat. I think here I remove the ridge and not on the plane just ... On the way he appreciated the beauty of the countryside with tropical vegetation. In the monsoon river-boats were rafts. Arriving at Tingo Maria saw cut in the profile of the hills Puma Ringri, Sleeping Beauty, which resembles the distance the body lying in a young and beautiful Women in eternal rest. In the afternoon we went to the Cave of the Owls, fascinating geological site. To get an old car lease full suspension, which was able to travel the rocky bed of a stream. Drive the short trip ... But worth seeing the stalactites and estalagnitas within the deep cave of owls. Tingo María tropical climate was very warm indeed. I remember

unforgettable evenings with fellow teachers, I was thrilled with the beers that are not cured me, even I thought that alcohol had a lower, a pork dish exquisoto a very nice Peruvian potato. How will I uploaded the cholesterol ... I do not regret
At the farewell reception thanked the care received, and the cocktail I took a few good glasses of pisco sour with the students of the course. Pisco sour very rich, good taste and finer than that used around here ...
Mrs. representative of the Rector of the University gave me a cute little doll to not forget the women of Huanuco, and a sober reminder that even I have on my office wall! The doll was stolen ...
Then I was invited to a party with dancing and everything. To say goodbye and remember my friend Virgil, who died, I was thrilled to tears ..

I returned to Lima in a small plane that would first turn to Tingo Maria.
