VETERINARY MEDICINE AND ME (9) Berrios Patricio Etchegaray. Travel to Peru and Mexico. My step Transient private universities

Travel to Peru and Mexico. My short time in private universities

In September 2002 I was invited to Peru to the XVI National Congress of Veterinary Sciences in Huanuco where I gave a lecture on influenza virus in domestic animals: emergence and reemergence. Also in Lima participated in the International Course of Small Animals in the fourth module on Advanced viral diseases. Vaccination, bases and types of vaccines. Interactive. I gave a talk 4 hours on vaccines and immunizations. This to some 100 veterinary field. The Dean of the Veterinary Medical College Department of Huanuco was Dr. Ubaldo Flores B. The University

Scientific south of Lima, School of Veterinary Medicine, I gave a talk about avian influenza in Chile in Veterinary Forum "Emerging Viral Diseases in Poultry organized by my friend Dr. Antonio Ramirez V. my stay in Lima was a success , both scientifically and socially, I was invited to the Racetrack in Lima to see some races at night and accompanied by exquisite Peruvian pisco sour. Also invited me to dinner at a place of distinction, needless to say that the food was really exquisite. Those who accompanied me were some nice people.

traveled from Lima to Huanuco in a modern bus that showed me how big is the mountain range the Andes with beautiful scenery. I was more than 3000 meters in a bus stop, and did not affect me at all height. The landscape near Huánuco was also impressive. I had received from the plane on my previous trip. So far so good, but, Huánuco was not the same colonial city almost met in 1994. In 8 years had changed radically, full of cars, machine games everywhere. A new university, built in a very modern. Everything was new. But the old friends, I saw only a few. Everything had changed. I returned from Huanuco and night bus, with a tinge of regret at the way everything changes so quickly ...

In 2003 I was a founding member and Vice-President of the Chilean Society of Veterinary Infectious Diseases. That company went very well, and then decline. I was editor of the newsletter of the society, which was the first to be discontinued because of all kinds, but mainly because of inertia and low commitment. In 2005 the company gave me the degree of Honorary Member, who thanked her in a heartfelt speech at the Central House of the University of Chile. At the time I declined to be President of the society. Of which I regret, because I would have made it work although it had been "on line". The best thing was the society was the study of epidemiological surveillance of communicable diseases of small pets. Landmark study in Latin America.

2 .- Travel to Mexico. 2006

In 2006 I went to Mexico City to launch the book "Veterinary vaccinology" S. Authors Mendoza, P. Berrios, Jose del Ciprian Carrasco and Eliseo Hernández. The authors were from the National Autonomous University of Mexico. Cuautitlan Izcalli. México.Estuve status in the house of Elisha Hernandez, who with his wife Irma Tejeda, both Ph.D, I was treated extremely well. The memories of my stay are imborrables.El book launch was at the Mining Palace, monumental building majestusoa French architecture, which seems to be falling due to earthquakes that have moved and changed the floor, but does not fall. I had to say a few words of thanks, not without emotion, and sign books sold like hotcakes.

The UNAM, in veterinary medicine I gave a talk on the situation of equine influenza and influenza in Chile. The Veterinary School is first class. With a building typical of Mexico City. The campus is just monumental. All big and with lots of art.

Of all the beautiful things that I had the pleasure of knowing, the most extraordinary was my visit, two days, the National Museum of Anthropology. I really had so many works of art of the Aztecs and contemporary peoples, who would write an entire chapter to describe them. Everything was awesome. The tomb of Palenque, the Aztec calendar, the feathered serpent Quetzacoalt etc etc etc ...

3 .- National Award for Scientific Activity. Veterinary Medical College of Chile. 2006

In January 2007, received the National Award for Scientific Activities in 2006, awarded by the Veterinary Medical College of Chile. A distinction which I appreciated very much. Dr. Hugo Díaz O. was the one I proposed. At the awards ceremony of the College, attended by my father, my children, sisters and a couple of grandchildren (children of a daughter of one of my sister). Also attended by two veterinary students at UAB. I had to make a speech of thanks. I got nervous and could not speak, I took the crook blames the microphone. I did not speak of science no less than politics. Talk about my journey through life from Calbuco chalupones at Curepto carts. Of vapors in southern Chile to the central railway. Telegraph to email. In my trips to neighboring countries and Europe, first turboprop quads and then on the big jumbo jets. From when he was a bare foot in the estuaries of Curepto and when I gave lectures in Brazil, Uruguay and Peru. Easily 50 years of activities. I did not speak of my scientific activities, for those who wanted to know more I indicated that my resume was in veterinarian school. In any case I think he deserved the prize, obviously with other colleagues.

4 .- My short time in private universities

the Universidad Iberoamericana in Science and Technology, between 1999 and 2001, did classes of Viral Diseases with Dr. Livio Zurita A. who made the bacteriology section. I also participated in the course of Microbiology, Dr. Nancy Poquet (RIP) working in virology. Infectious were three courses in parallel, which was a tin or UNICIT Ibero pagada.La was a typical private college that was owned by high school teacher and owner of the farm. Women of character. He did what he wanted with faculty. For better or for worse. Students were more boys than those of goats Chillán. There was everything. And any cosa.Tuve accused an assistant "ad honorem" Dr Jorge Valenzuela, an excellent student and now a consummate professional dedicated to wildlife animals

I director of the Department of Pathology between July and December 1999. I retired almost unnoticed because it did not for these functions. I never understood the Palavicino Ivan Dean (RIP). I retired to be misinterpreted in a problem of bad or very bad notes were students in the course of infectious only for not having enough time to study a field that was 6 hours per week. And so there was no more than my time at the Ibero. Occasionally I run into former students, UNICIT. Do well in their activities, which I'm glad. I returned in 2010 to do some classes. I also welcomed a class ...

In 2001 I was assistant professor at the Department of Immunology at the Universidad Mayor. A university of some standing. I took Dr. Macarena Vidal playing around with it would make kinds of Virology. The pupils were of greater economic power. And they misbehaved in practical immunology, talked and talked. I had to make practical inn by inn. One day I got bored and started playing a post in code. A student asked me I did and I told him I was sending a message in Morse code. When asked about what I said, I said: Shut up ....! m. Fell silent a few minutes and continued ... One student told me to be careful because they rated their teachers at the end of the year, I said that the university would not go so they could put whatever they wanted. I did not. In 2003 I

classes of Virology at the University of Viña del Mar. All a case with students coming from other careers. And more goats guys! Just remember the trip to Vineyard in time was not exactly summer.

Since 2006 I classes of viral diseases at the University Andrés Bello. Since 2008 I studies of Virology what was a mistake on my part. This trend is repeated college career in veterinary medicine that increase in number of students but not in quality. It happens in all universities. And something that is also universal, the location of branches of the third year in the first and second year. That should be good in Europe, USA and East selection with students, very competitive and very good performance. See what happens over time. Perhaps it is useful ... I will miss many friends UAB students, I had no friends in other private universities ... My stay at the UNAB was extremely positive in 2006 and 2007! I even applauded some classes ...

And after 2010? Who knows? ... Go go

seems that I am witch, because I retired from UAB, and hung up the power points for good ...
