Note: I had many doubts at the time of deciding who was the protagonist of this film. Initially, I tended to split the role between Sebastian, the director, and Costa, the producer. Sebastian would be its main ally (though sometimes awkward for Costa).
My analysis:
In general, the script for "rain also" has, in my opinion, enough pace and style "very professional." The characters are well defined, with motivations very clear and obvious conflict.
A group of people seem willing to give everything to make a movie. The environment becomes hostile, revealing a situation of poverty that are not used. However, fighting with all his might to get to shoot the film in the best conditions. However, in the process, one discovers that this goal is not so important. There is something larger than your movie. Falls short of what I wanted to start. Reach for something a little better.
I think the best moments of the film occur in the first half, when we see the ironic parallel between the English invasion led by Christopher Columbus and the Pacific theater equipment, five centuries later. The description of the actors and their identification with the characters they embody, the discussions generated by including the film are rolling, the relationship with the producer, director monomania, it just seems slightly more interested in conflicts Costa the reality that surrounds them ...
Here I think I see the hand of Icíar Bollaín, which we are accustomed to a seemingly less ambitious movie "the rain also, but with greater attention to human conflicts and the description of believable characters.
The outbreak of the revolt of the water and, above all, Daniel's involvement in it cause the biggest problems for the film. And I speak not only of producing Costa, but he directs Bollaín.
The film starts to develop gradually into something close to the action film. And Costa, the producer, goes from being a ruthless producer who boasts about how bad the locals pay, at a rate that leaves the film through a city "at war" to save a girl who barely knows because he asks a woman he knows no more.
point is that, in my opinion the second turning point (I can not say the minutes of footage in which it occurs, this may not take notes, sorry), the story falls apart.
Why?
I think this is a great dilemma: continue with my project (selfish) or go to save a girl?
But in my opinion, is not sufficiently prepared and in the time arises, rings false. Bolivian woman sounds that bet before the hotel is the screenwriter. (Yes, I think Laverty with a wig that is asking to go to Costa Laverty seek to skirt).
for several reasons:
- It is unclear why women go to Costa to rescue his daughter (the relationship with him has been minimal, nothing makes you think it is a good man, has not been planted Costa has no power that can facilitate the rescue of the girl ...)
- The climax of the story depends on the rescue of a nearly anonymous character (the girl) sounds like something for free (a decision of placing a character writer absolutely instrumental in a critical situation). If Costa is playing the neck by someone who has been important in history (Daniel himself, for example) I think it would have made more sense.
- We have not been sufficiently indicated that Costa may be changing their minds, relativizing the importance of his film and sympathizing with the problems of the people of Cochabamba. Staying true to the character, the dilemma would not have had any force: Costa had departed from Bolivia with a fake smile, and maybe a few bills, and would have risen to the production truck to continue with his film.
The subsequent outcome with Costa at the wheel of an SUV, through barricades, rescuing the girl and other injuries, I found it quite unlikely. The "villain" had become a hero and I did not know why or how it happened. It was as if, suddenly, we had entered another movie. Possibly one of Iñárritu in a dark hero, despite not achieving its original purpose, just redeeming. Unfortunately, we can only guess why.
